Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
DMD, MPH · Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Carroll is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She graduated with honors from the University of Arizona, where she studied Psychology and Biochemistry. After graduating from dental school and earning both her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) and Master of Public Health (MPH), Dr. Carroll completed a two-year post-doctoral specialty education program in pediatric dentistry at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry has certified Dr. Carroll as a specialist in pediatric dentistry.
Pediatric dentistry is also a family profession for Dr. Carroll. Her father was a pediatric dentist for nearly 40 years, and she began her career practicing alongside him in Arizona. She later owned a pediatric dental practice there for more than eight years before her family moved to Los Angeles.
The move to Los Angeles was deeply personal. Dr. Carroll’s son, Eli, was diagnosed with autism when he was very young, and the family relocated so he could have access to specialized treatment and services. That experience changed the way Dr. Carroll thought about pediatric healthcare. As both a dentist and a parent, she saw firsthand how much difference it makes when a provider understands that a child may need care adapted to the child’s communication style, sensory needs, behavior, medical history, and family.
She does not believe every child should be expected to tolerate the same dental experience in the same way.
After moving to Los Angeles, Dr. Carroll began working with the USC pediatric dental residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), where she now serves as an attending doctor. Her hospital role has given her extensive experience caring for children with complex medical histories and significant medical needs, including children whose dental treatment requires coordination in a hospital-based setting.
While working at CHLA, Dr. Carroll noticed that many families with medically complex children and children with special needs were traveling from the South Bay for pediatric dental care. She wanted to create a local dental office that could better accommodate those children. That goal became Dr. Shari Carroll Pediatric Dentistry in Redondo Beach. Dr. Carroll’s approach is highly personalized. She does not believe every child should be expected to tolerate the same dental experience in the same way. Her office includes a dedicated sensory room, and the practice uses an individualized sensory profile to help identify the environment, communication style, and supports that may make a visit more successful.
Outside the office
When she is not practicing dentistry, Dr. Carroll loves spending time here in the South Bay with her two hilarious children. If you live in the Beach Cities, you will probably run into her dropping off the kids at school, on the beach with her family, or at a yoga class letting off some steam – please stop and say hi!
